 Why an online store selling Hippie Clothes?

According to Stephen Forster, owner of Himalayan Handmades, he was looking for opportunities while travelling back in 1992 and liked the unique clothing he saw in Kathmandu. Stephen goes on to say: “I didn't really choose to sell "Hippie clothing". It just so happened that the clothing made in Nepal is suited to that market. When I started Himalayan Handmades, I had a vision of bringing those unique colours and patterns of Kathmandu to the world.”

Stephen believes that his business is more than just an online hippie clothing store. “We try to offer our customers a rich, sensory experience that leaves them feeling adventurous and inspired enough to purchase our products. So, what’s next for Himalayan Handmades International?

I recently sat down for a Q & A session with Stephen to find out how Covid19 affected his business as well as to get a sneak peek of what’s next in terms of his online hippie store. Here’s what went down:

Q – How has the past and current Covid19 situation impacted your business and what challenges did you have to face?

A – “The main challenges were obviously having an extended period of lockdown in Nepal. They had a country-wide lockdown that came into effect on March 24th, 2020, and ended on July 21st 2020. A second lockdown began on April 29th 2021 and ended on May 13th 2021. For us, this meant a huge back-up of orders. Some suppliers and their workers contracted the virus which also delayed delivery from them. One of the main issues we faced was the closure of a number of offices of courier companies in Nepal. This meant we could only go with some of the bigger courier companies. Courier costs increased due to less competition. Many airlines stopped flights to Nepal and world-wide. The number of passengers also decreased which meant a decrease in the number of flights. Prices also increased due to limited flights.”

Q – In your opinion, how has the clothing industry changed since lockdown?

A – “For us the biggest change was the increase in the price of cotton which in-turn shot up the cost of fabric. Many of the smaller suppliers have sadly had to shut down as well as some of our competitors. More shops are ordering online from wholesalers like Himalayan Handmades due to the travel restrictions worldwide.”

Q – Are you generating any new ideas for your website?
A – “Firstly, we always aim for originality and we never compromise on quality. There are a lot of hippie clothing websites out there that we have to compete with so coming up with new ideas for our product range is not always an easy task. We have expanded our website to include natural soaps, essential oils, body balms and more. We have also recently introduced a cute, fun selection of kids hippie bohemian clothes. In the near future we will be launching a range of absolutely stunning, handcrafted Tibetan rugs so look out for those. We are also looking for larger wholesalers in the USA, the UK and Australia to order in bulk from Himalayan Handmades.”

Q – Given the current situation, what can Himalayan Handmades do to become more successful going forward?

A – “We can definitely be more competitive in terms of pricing for wholesalers. We can also design and source items where quantities of 100+ per design are ordered. We work with quite a number of fair trade clothing suppliers in Nepal that can produce large quantities for stores looking to buy in bulk.”

Q – What can new and existing customers expect from Himalayan Handmades International in the next year?

A- “They can definitely expect more products, a more varied product range, and hopefully if all goes well, a speeding up of delivery times. We are also looking to supply large e-commerce websites and expand our US market.”
