Woodstock

If you’re looking for a movie that undeniably captures the spirit and music of the 60’s, then Woodstock is it. It’s an Academy award-winning documentary about the celebrated and renowned 1969 Woodstock festival. It was a 3 day music-fest held in the summer of ’69 attended by a whopping 400,000 people.

The directing and editing of this film succeeds in making you feel like you were right there in that massive crowd of revellers. A lot of the musical performances were truly memorable, namely the Jimi Hendrix guitar solo and Joan Baez singing "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” among many others. This is not just simply a music documentary. It’s a remarkable, moving film that shows people enjoying the simple things in life.

Easy Rider

Easy Rider was a low-budget 1969 film starring Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper. Hopper also doubles as director. This film follows the two drug trafficking bikers travelling across the US. They use a drug deal in Los Angeles to finance a trip to Mardi Gras. We follow their exploits as they journey cross-country and meet various people.

It’s a movie that celebrates sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll. It’s a counter-culture classic that sums up the era and captures it like only the medium of film can. PS: Jack Nicholson’s short performance halfway through this movie steals the show. You will either love this film, or you won’t.

Hair

Hair is a film adaptation of the controversial Broadway musical. It’s a 1979 anti-war comedy/drama that centres around a farm boy and war draftee (John Savage) who, on his way to the army, makes friends with and joins a family of hippies living in Central Park. He gets introduced to their nonconformist environment, LSD and marijuana.

Milos Forman directs this classic that celebrates the trials, tribulations and music of the mid-sixties. The musical numbers contribute hugely to the success of this film and included dance scenes choreographed by Twyla Tharp. “This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius!”

Thumb Tripping

In this 1972 film, Meg Foster and Michael Burns star as an adventurous hippie couple who team up to hike up the coast of California and accept every ride they get offered. This movie follows their adventures along the way and the quirky characters they encounter.

The film is livened up with a soundtrack that includes some really great folk-rock and country tunes. Some would argue that this film is not as good as Easy Rider but it is engaging and well worth the watch.
